Muller Engineering Company of Lakewood, in conjunction with its client partners, was recently recognized as a national Engineering Excellence Awards winner for two projects by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). One of the winning projects was Westminster Station Park for the City of Westminster and Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, which won an Honor Award in the “Water Resources” category.
The ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards received almost 200 project submittals that were winners in ACEC state competitions from around the country and selected 20 Honor Award winners. The awards were presented at the annual “Academy Awards of Engineering” celebration in early May in Washington D.C.
Westminster Station Park, a multi-agency joint venture led by the City of Westminster and Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD), transformed a vacant field littered with trash, plagued by contaminated groundwater and burdened with deteriorating sanitary sewer lines into an enticing 40-acre oasis; complete with a shimmering pond, green play lawns, mammoth boulders, and trails winding beside a flowing creek bordered with trees. The project includes a restored drainageway, regional stormwater detention facility, multi-purpose park, and regional transit-oriented development located between Lowell Boulevard and Federal Boulevard in the heart of Westminster, Colorado. The project seamlessly integrates 172 acre-feet of regional flood detention and 4,200 feet of Little Dry Creek stream rehabilitation using loose rock-grade control structures and riffle pool complexes. Other elements include roughly 3,400 feet of concrete regional trail, 26,300 feet of local trail, almost an acre of concrete plaza, parking and roadway improvements, nine low-water creek crossings, and three large span pedestrian bridges that provide neighborhood connectivity across Little Dry Creek. The project has been a catalyst for adjacent economic growth and highlights the benefits of multi-functional design and collaboration.
Muller Engineering Company was proud to manage and lead the site development design, hydrology and hydraulics analysis, floodplain permitting, roadway and trail design, and structural design efforts.
