FRONT RANGE TRAIL
Douglas County, Colorado
As a subconsultant, Muller’s engineers provided hydraulic and structural design services for a 6-mile-long reach of the Colorado Front Range Trail within Douglas County. This important multi-use trail will eventually span the entire distance between the northern and southern borders of Colorado. The trail alignment within Douglas County follows the beautiful Plum Creek open space corridor between the Greenland and Tomah Road Exits off I-25. The trail alignment and associated improvements were carefully designed to minimize impacts to the existing stream corridor and associated vegetation and wildlife habitat.
Muller designed three low-profile pedestrian bridges that were constructed in strategic locations to cross Plum Creek while blending into the natural character of the surrounding area. The steel beam bridges were welded to sheetpile foundations for improved resiliency in this erodible channel environment. Use of concrete was minimized due to access difficulties.
In addition, select areas of bio-engineered stream bank improvements along Plum Creek, a continuous soft surface trail, and repairs to damaged drainage facilities off I-25 were constructed as part of this project.
