HOLTWOOD ROAD BRIDGE OVER HORSE CREEK
El Paso County, Colorado

Holtwood Road is a rural, gravel surface road on the eastern border of El Paso County and western border of Elbert County in Colorado. The existing structure was a 7-span, 197-foot timber bridge built in 1935. The poor load rating for this structure was becoming an impediment to the local community, restricting access for the heavy farm equipment that operates on this road.
Muller’s engineers designed a new 218-foot, 2-span, 35-foot out-to-out structure with prestressed I girders. Muller prepared the design and contract documents for the new bridge, roadway approaches, and channel improvements under the federally funded CDOT Local Agency Program. The project required CDOT clearances for environmental impacts, utilities, ROW, and traffic operations.
With the project lying within an adjudicated floodplain, Muller completed a floodplain analysis to certify that the new bridge opening created no rise in the floodplain, avoiding the need for a CLOMR or LOMR. Muller provided design support during construction.
