LENA GULCH TRIBUTARY H REGIONAL DETENTION AND WATER QUALITY FACILITY
Jefferson County, Colorado
Muller worked with City of Golden, Jefferson County, and CDOT to complete the design and construction of a regional detention basin in the infield at the I-70 and 6th Avenue interchange, providing water quality and flood control benefits to downstream receiving waters. The primary aim of the infield detention was to reduce peak flow of stormwater runoff downstream to a 48-inch pipe crossing under 6th Avenue, and an undersized 48-inch pipe under Colfax Avenue. Prior to this project, the 48-inch pipe under Colfax experienced flooding and resulted in incidental detention upstream.
The regional full spectrum detention facility has a focus on vegetation and natural treatment processes, employing vegetated soft-bottom forebays and meandering low flow channel and a prominent mitigation wetlands area. The outlet structure was equipped with trash racks, self-cleaning grates, and orifice plate. The three inlet culverts, with extremely steep slopes, were extended to the pond bottom and discharge into forebays. Dissipation structures were built to reduce the energy of water entering the pond. The soft bottom basin includes low flow channels with boulder markers for future sediment cleanout maintenance.
In addition to providing flood control, the infield detention basin is the first Colorado regional water quality project utilizing funding administered by CDOT for regional water quality improvements.
