SMART 160 TRAIL - CRADER SECTION

Durango, Colorado

A book cover featuring a green line, highlighting its unique projects.

As Durango, Colorado continues to grow and expand, recreation remains a central priority for the community. The City of Durango selected Muller engineering to design a new section of multi-use trail, expanding the existing trail network further east along the US 160 alignment. The project includes over a half mile of new trail east of the US 550 interchange to Design Center Drive located within the Davidson Development. There is also a 900-foot spur of 10-foot-wide concrete trail connecting North to Wilson Gulch Road.

Muller’s engineers designed a 120-foot prefabricated steel bridge to span a tributary to Wilson Gulch. The poor soils necessitated deep foundations supporting both the bridge and approach slabs. A floodplain analysis of Wilson Gulch was performed to size the bridge and establish a trail that is resilient to the threat of flooding in the Wilson Gulch floodplain. A retaining wall was designed to limit encroachment into the floodplain.

The Durango project was completed as a CDOT Local Agency Oversight Project with CDOT Region 5 oversight. Environmental, right-of-way, and utility clearances were required.
