URBAN STORM DRAINAGE CRITERIA MANUAL UPDATE – VOLUMES 1, 2, AND 3

Denver, Colorado

A book cover featuring a green line, highlighting its unique projects.

Muller has supported MHFD on the update of multiple chapters in the Urban Storm Drainage Criteria Manual (USDCM) Volumes 1, 2 and 3.  This includes a complete revision to the Open Channels chapter (located in Volume 1) which provided a strong emphasis on natural channel design including support of riparian vegetation, promotion of infiltration, groundwater recharge and enhancement of water quality through reduced erosion and vegetative filtering via soil-water interactions.  Void-filled riprap for riffle stream features is also introduced in the Open Channels chapter.

The Hydraulic Structures chapter (located in Volume 2) was revised to include guidance for both simplified and detailed design procedures for drop structures.  Sculpted concrete drop structures were incorporated into the chapter to include guidance on the engineering design (including aesthetics) and construction.

The Storage chapter (also located in Volume 2) was updated with comprehensive criteria for full-spectrum detention including guidance on the design of outlet structures and emergency spillways.

Muller is currently working alongside MHFD and a team of consultants to revise Volume 3, Chapter 4 Stormwater Control Measures (SCM).  Responsibilities for this update include preparation of design criteria and  updated graphics for grass buffers and swales, bioretention and extended detention basins.
