Siena Pump Station and Transmission Line

Broomfield, Colorado

A book cover featuring a green line, highlighting its unique projects.

To meet peak summer demands for the potable water supply system, the City and County of Broomfield (Broomfield) planned to pump water from Siena Reservoir, near the intersection of Sheridan Parkway and Lowell Boulevard to Glasser Reservoir, which feeds raw water to Broomfield’s water treatment plant on 144th Avenue. At Glasser Reservoir, Broomfield planned for a valve vault with a bypass line to the water treatment plant to help mitigate occasional algae blooms.

Broomfield selected Muller to perform design services to analyze alternatives and prepare design documents for a new pump station and piping system that best meets the needs of the community. The initial objective was to prepare a preliminary design report to define the project scope of work, set forth the anticipated design and construction schedule, and establish preliminary facility sizing and construction costs to present to City Council for approval to advance the project to final design. We successfully completed the design report with recommendations for the project improvements.

As part of the preliminary design report, we conducted a hydraulic analysis of the pump station and transmission line. This analysis was used to recommend pipeline diameters, number of pumps, and estimated power needs for the proposed station. Additionally, water transient modeling was performed to evaluate how various pipeline diameters, pipeline materials, and pump sizing would impact the overall surge risk of the future station. After approval to proceed from City Council, Broomfield amended our contract for final design services. Part of the work included support from Muller to select a CM/GC firm to work with the team to develop the final construction documents and for Muller to assist with construction phase services.

The project construction is nearing completion and includes the new pump station, 5,200 feet of 24-inch water transmission line, 6,400 feet of 30-inch transmission line, associated valves and fittings, and 260 feet of bored steel casing pipes. Along with the water lines, the project includes 10,000 feet of 2” conduit for fiber optic lines between the pump station and the water treatment plant. The pump station includes four 3,000 gpm pumps, instrumentation, meter vaults, and outlet modifications for Siena Reservoir.
